Portrait of Dr. Phil Tanner, author and world traveller

Dr. Phil’S BIO

Dr. Phil Tanner has spent a lifetime crossing borders – both geographical and cultural. Raised in a United Nations family across Asia, Latin America, and Africa during the Cold War, he has travelled to more than 165 countries as an international relief and development consultant, humanitarian, and researcher. His work has often taken him into places where understanding people mattered more than understanding politics, and where careful observation, trusted relationships, and the quiet gathering of information could make all the difference.

Sh*T People Don’t KNOw: The Backstory of Everything

Our language is insane. In my travels to the far corners of the earth, I realized that vocabulary and grammar weren’t the main obstacles to communications. It was the expressions and cultural references we use with reckless ease. After a life-time of being an observer and listener, and being initiated into some intriguing and exclusive organizations, it was time for this book to be written.

Sh*t People Don’t Know is a must-read and a great gift for someone who just needs to know!

“Every Family Has a Story …”

Kim’s Game is an extraordinary true story of one boy’s search for answers, across empires, wars, and spy craft. From a small village in Victorian England, his breath-taking journey takes him to the far corners of the world.

Every chapter crosses cultures and borders, and describes events that seem impossible. It is the story of a boy who witnessed some of the world’s most terrifying and exhilirating events. You’ll journey with him through the dramatic expulsion of Taiwan from the United Nations, the dangerous beginnings of Mexico’s drug cartels, Azad Kashmir’s struggle for independence, the last desperate hours of Saigon’s fall, and even the Russian invasion of Afghanistan.

Were some of his childhood games really just games? Were the adults around him always what they seemed? If you’ve ever questioned your identity or sense of belonging, you won’t want to miss “The Child Spy.”

In a world of politics, shifting borders, and subterfuge – what remains when everything around you keeps changing?

Part memoir, part Cold War adventure, and part personal detective story – this book is a search for the child spy who may have been there all along.
